What's Going On was recorded in June 1970 and from March to May 1971 in the studios of Hitsville USA, Golden World, United Sound in Detroit and The Sound Factory in West Hollywood . Record was produced by the performers themselves , the first time in his career.

In various public and professional surveys , he was selected as one of the iconic records in popular music history and one of the best albums ever released . In 2003, the drive took sixth place in the list of " 500 Greatest Albums of All Time " by the magazine Rolling Stone.
