Introduction
On behalf of the Salzburg Festival, Jan Lauwers was again asked to take on a new production and so he devoted himself to the rarely performed contemporary opera "Intolleranza 1960" by Luigi Nono. The Italian composer Luigi Nono (1924-1990) strove for a new form of musical theatre that experiments with the human voice, with simultaneous processes and with spatial sound effects and brings them to bear in a unique way. Intolleranza 1960 was Nono's first musical theatre work and was commissioned by the 24th International Festival of Contemporary Music of the Venice Biennale, during which it premiered 60 years ago at the Teatro La Fenice. It was recognized as an important contribution of the post-war avant-garde and a key work in Nono's first creative phase. This production, which was on the programme on the occasion of the 100th anniversary celebrations of the Salzburg Festival, is not only unique in terms of content but also because Nono's works have been repeatedly performed in exemplary productions in Salzburg over the past 25 years. With "Intolleranza 1960", Jan Lauwers reinterprets the iconic work from 1961. Conductor Ingo Metzmacher, a profound connoisseur of Nono's music, will take over the musical direction. Jan Lauwer's choice to perform this opera fits into today's contemporary picture. His research on what art would mean in society and what political power art can convey is characteristic of this. An international ensemble of performers, dancers, singers and musicians from all over the world were part of the salzburg Festival's most spectacular music theatre production.
