In 2003, the album was ranked number 292 in the list of the 500 greatest albums of all time by the magazine Rolling Stone.

After an unsatisfactory level of sales of the first album The Velvet Underground and Nico, the relationship with Andy Warhol group deteriorated. They performed throughout most of 1967. Many of their live performances accompanied by noisy improvisations that have become key elements on White Light / White Heat. The group eventually parted ways with Warhol and Nico, and eventually began to record their second album with Tom Wilson as producer.

The album was recorded in just two days , and with a markedly different style than in The Velvet Underground and Nico. John Cale described White Light / White Heat, as "very violent ... The first record was somewhat aristocratic , somewhat beautiful. Second - consciously anti- beautiful . " Sterling Morrison said : "We are all moving in the same direction. The first song on the album of the same name begins with vibrant piano sound Reed in the spirit of Jerry Lee Lewis , describing the use of amphetamines . Reed's favorite song from the album became ominous «Lady Godiva's Operation», of a failed lobotomy transsexual . «The Gift» is a short story written by Reed and narrated by Cale background music with his distinctive Scottish accent . One of the most famous songs of the plate became meditative «Here She Comes Now», outswing later REM, Nirvana, Galaxie 500 and Cabaret Voltaire. However , most experimental moments of the plate were two noise -rock compositions - «I Heard Her Call My Name» and «Sister Ray», and the second lasts about 17 minutes.
