Goodbye Yellow Brick Road was recorded in May 1973 at a studio in the French castle , located in the municipality of Herouville , and released in October of the same year in the United States and Canada on the label MCA Records and in other countries by DJM Records. On the plate there is a song «Candle in the Wind», written in memory of Marilyn Monroe, as well as three successful singles : «Bennie and the Jets», «Goodbye Yellow Brick Road» and «Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting». This is the first double album in the discography of the musician.

Goodbye Yellow Brick Road was the most commercially successful album in his career against the singer. He won first place in the U.S. and UK charts and was awarded a platinum disc from the British Association of Producers of Phonograms and platinum seven times - from the American Association for the record companies . Its global circulation of over 30 million copies.

Originally the album received mixed reviews from critics , who considered it too lengthy and uneven, although containing a few good songs , but he later came to be regarded as the best and most popular music of Elton John . In Rolling Stone magazine placed it at the 91 th place in the list of "500 greatest albums of all time." He also took the 59th place among the hundred best albums according to the British Channel 4 .
