【简          介】

"In Robert Young's thoroughly researched film Alambrista meaning The Illegal, it is clear that the problems of immigrants did not dry up with the 1921 restrictions. The economy needs Mexicans to pick fruit in the South-western states, but the authorities refuse to acknowledge the presence of the illegal immigrants who do the work, except to throw them out of the country.Young's portait, put together after he had lived for a season with the Mexican farm-workers, has the rare combination of being true to life and of being a well-made film with a gripping story line. By tracing the plight of one such worker, sympathetically played by Domingo Ambriz, Young runs through the age-old problems of immigrants - the language barrier, the culture shock at arriving in a very different society, the filthy exploitation, and the inevitable alteration of morals on the part of the immigrant. The worker makes two journeys to the United States: both are different. In the first he manages to find happiness and money but in the second he finds only graft and tragedy. As he voluntarily returns to Mexico, he can feel only pity for a woman who gives birth at the border and rejoices because her son will not need papers." - Martin Dowle, The Scotsman.
