Product Description

The Classic Shocker from DARIO ARGENTO, Director of THE BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE and SUSPIRIA When a simple robbery at a research institute leads to a series of brutal murders, a blind puzzle maker (Karl Malden of A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE) and a tenacious reporter (James Franciscus of MAROONED) begin their own investigation of the crimes. With nine different clues to follow, they uncover a shocking web of twisted genetics and dark sexual secrets that will finally lead them to a shattering climax of violence and suspense. Originally released in 1971, THE CAT O'NINE TAILS secured the international reputation of director Dario Argento as 'The Italian Hitchcock.' This is the definitive version of Argento's masterful second film, now fully restored from its original camera negative and presented completely uncut and uncensored in stunning widescreen.

Cookies Are Sweet And So Is This Giallo Masterpiece From Dario Argento

Cookies Are Sweet And So Is This Giallo Masterpiece From Dario Argento
"The Cat O' Nine Tails" is one of my favorite gialli directed by Dario Argento. It is pure giallo - a great example of the Italian Giallo genre. A psychotic steals secret documents from a research lab. Soon everyone connected with the lab is stalked and killed because they may know too much. This highly suspenseful, highly emotional giallo combines mystery with technology. Experiments are being conducted involving the XYY chromosome; anyone born with it may possess a disposition for murder. I thought the relationship between the blind puzzle maker Franco Aldo (Karl Malden of "The Streets of San Francisco") and his daughter Lori (Cinzia De Carolis) was very touching and warmhearted. Lori has nicknamed Franco "Cookie" because cookies are sweet. They share a close relationship in which they look closely after each other. It was fun watching them help the reporter Carlo Giordano (James Franciscus of "Beneath the Planet of the Apes") solve the murders. Blue Underground has provided a great DVD of "The Cat O' Nine Tails." The video has been perfectly restored and is presented in widescreen with an aspect ratio of 2.35:1. The audio is loud and clear. I've never seen the Anchor Bay presentation. However, beware of the one from Miracle Productions because it is presented in a fuzzy, full screen edited version with an extremely important murder deleted. In fact, be wary of all DVDs made my Miracle Productions; you don't know what you may be getting. Ennio Morricone has provided a great musical score for "The Cat O` Nine Tails." It consists of several great jazz pieces with numerous flute solos. Great sets and beautiful Italian scenery also highlight this film. "The Cat O' Nine Tails" is a must have for any fan of Italian gialli and/or a fan of Dario Argento who also directed the giallo megahits "The Bird with the Crystal Plumage," "Deep Red," and "Tenebre."

This is Dario Argento's second of three films referred to as Argento's "Animal Trilogy", it is followed by Four Flies on Grey Velvet (1972). and the first films he di i call them his 8 classics is a must...

This film shows his ever changing film style from his first film The Bird With The Crystal Plumage (1970) to this film
The Cat O'Nine Tails (1971) to Four Flies on Grey Velvet (1972). then he did a few tv films and came back with Deep Red (1975), know as the best giallo film ever made, it would then be followed by Suspiria (1977) the first of a trilogy about "The Three Mothers" and his work as producer on Dawn of the Dead (1978),, check out his cut of the film too it has more goblin music in it and faster pace ect.

this movie is what can i saw Dario, he always is the shape as the killer his hands on weapon ect most never know it lol..

any way great print , great audio some extras price cant be beat one of the cheapest dario films for your collection too.

Reportedly, this is Dario Argento least favorite film. And while it does leave a lot to be desired, it's not quite as bad as Dario would have you believe. The plot involves a break-in at a research facility. Nothing appears to have been taken. A guard was beat up. It causes quite a commotion with the police and the press but the people behind the research facility would rather it was ignored. It could have ended there but for one of the researchers making a phone call to someone, saying he knows what was stolen, knows why it was stolen, and more importantly, knows who stole it. The blackmailer meets a grisly end when he's shoved in front of a train. Fortunately, the murder was caught on film. Unfortunately, the murderer knows this and kills the photographer, stealing his film. A simple crime that might have gone unnoticed now escalates as more people finally begin to suspect foul play. Soon, there are three murders and a little girl is kidnapped. Who will solve the mystery first, the police or a blind ex-reporter (Karl Malden as Franco Arno) and his sidekick (James Franciscus as Carlo Giordani)?

As always, Argento's eye for imagery is put to good use, there are several fabulous shots, not the least of which involves a chase sequence and a fight on a roof. Argento says his favorite technique is creating moments that are still, detached. I think he means "static" because there are more than a few instances where things lag for lack of purpose. I also didn't care for the final resolution because he (admitted) that he wanted it to be ambiguous. I hate ambiguous endings, there are so.................vague.

Flawed as it is, this movie is still fun (and absorbing) to watch.

I just wanted to let everyone know about the Blu-Ray quality of this movie. The movie itself is a Dario Argento classic and his second film. I own the 2007 Blue Underground DVD and just bought the 2012 Blue Underground Blu-ray. Wow this BLU-RAY reveals such clarity and detail. You can see faces in cars on the street and the beautiful landscape of Italy. I have seen so much more definition here than I have even seen on the 2007 dvd release. I could even make out the words on the crossword puzzle that Karl Malden is working on in the beginning . Guys don't miss out on this one. Blue Underground did a fantastic job restoring the film on the 2007 release but have really outdone themselves on this Blu-Ray. Enjoy!

I really enjoyed this movie and so I bought the DVD; it plays well and have no problems with the playback. This is a pretty normal, slow, Argento movie, it's not stylistic like Suspiria but it's a Who Done It, so it's enjoyable nonetheless.

His movies are very overrated. They are not cleverly put together. This is probably one of his better movies.....and that's not saying much.

This is definitely the version of this film to buy. I made the mistake of buying the Diamond Entertainment version (girl on the cover with hands around her neck) which was full-screen and not a sharp picture, and edited down to 1:28:30 from the 1:52:00 the film is supposed to be, although the back cover falsely claimed it was the full 112 minute movie.) This is wide-screen and very clear picture, and appears to be complete (correct running time and containing numerous scenes edited out of the other Diamond Entertainment version.) If you like Dario Argento's work, you should like this film. My guess is that reviewer Leonard Maltin, who gave this film 2 stars, did not see this full version of the film, but rather one of the badly edited versions, such as the aforementioned Diamond Entertainment version, which completed omitted the entire cemetery scene, edited the murders and the fall down the elevator shaft scene, the Catherine Spaak topless scene, and on and on, totaling nearly 24 minutes gone from the movie.) It would be hard to keep a movie coherent with that much editing.

I'm a total Dario Argento fan and I've enjoyed seeing this movie again. I remember seeing this movie on television back in the 80's. Karl Malden and James Franciscus gave great performances.

I have had a faded pan and scan copy of this minor Dario Argento gallo for years. I was looking forward to seeing this film in it's original format - and was not disappointed. Beautiful widescreen transfer makes this a must for the Argento fan.

This is Dario Argento I love. Myabe not as great as in Deep Red or Four flies, but so good at redefining the paths of thriller and noir. Karl Malden is a great blind man, totally believable, and Argento proves to be one of the best to exploit that to create a constant sense of threat, playing a lot with sound and sudden details and editing cuts. Maybe the ending is,as usual with him, not so satisfying, but still it is a totally enjoyable and personal thriller
