Product Description
With RICHARD III, director, producer, and star Laurence Olivier (Hamlet) brings Shakespeare's masterpiece of Machiavellian villainy to mesmerizing cinematic life. Olivier is diabolically captivating as Richard, Duke of Gloucester, who, through a set of murderous machinations, steals the crown from his brother Edward. The supporting cast—including Ralph Richardson (Fallen Idol), John Gielgud (Arthur), and Claire Bloom (The Spy Who Came in from the Cold)—is just as impressive. Filmed in VistaVision and Technicolor, RICHARD III is one of the most visually inspired of all big-screen Bard adaptations.

With an impressive cast of wonderful actors this is a feast to the senses, hard to match these days. The fairly elementary sets of the time are not in the least disappointing. The blu-ray high definition transfer is amazing, one of the best I have come across, make this a very worthy purchase, even if you own the DVD version of the same film.
The film follows the play by Shakespeare very closely. In terms of acting, I feel that this is one of Olivier’s best achievements. With such a crisp image, to match even ten-year-old films, for something which is well over fifty-years old, I highly recommend this blu-ray disc.
This allows the production and acting to show through clearly. Love him or not (I do love him), Olivier and the rest of this strong cast are seen in all their glory. The audio commentary, and interview with Olivier, are welcome extras.
A complete and full restoration of a 60 year old classic.

Imperfections of the production aside, this bluray breathes new life into one of the definitive classical acting peformances of modern times. For the film is primarily a vehicle for Olivier. Outwardly his Richard is a limping panther; pale, black-haired and evilly debonair. But it is the mind within that terrifies. Expressed in a thin voice like a searching blade is a glittering irony and frightening rage. It's a quality of the film that Olivier draws the viewer into Richard's confidence and we follow him, fascinated and appalled by his villainy. Essentially, as the Duke of Gloucester, Richard removes all those who precede him in line to the throne, his brother Clarence and two young princes among them, and for a short time, realises his ambition for the crown.
As well as lead actor, Olivier also directed a cast that included John Gielgud, Cedric Hardwicke, Ralph Richardson, Claire Bloom and Stanley Baker. His design concept for the film was modelled on illustrations from the medieval Book of Hours with accompanying pageantry. The panoply of colours jumps out with astonishing vibrancy in this new restoration by The Film Foundation. Detail is improved and borders are more sharply defined. The soundtrack, although only mono, is also enhanced which helps to amplify subtleties in the dialogue.
The technical excellence of this Criterion release heightens the pleasure of watching probably the greatest Shakespearian actor of the twentieth century performing at the peak of his powers.
